I have met with thousands of companies over my 25+ year career in IT and the titles, roles and responsibilities of architects are as varied as a box of chocolates. Personally I think that variances are fine — different companies need different architect roles and I’m not hung up on the specific title(s). However, IMO the critical part is consistency of expectations and synergy between the architect roles. You should really see a compounding business value realization if the architects are working in tight partnership.

(In Salesforce, the internal IT group reporting into our CIO is called “Business Technology” so you’ll see me use BT to refer to Salesforce IT)

I lead the Salesforce Enterprise Architecture team within Salesforce Business Technology (BT) and Chacha Choudhury is our BT Chief Architect. We are often asked the following questions:

  • what specific architect roles exist in Salesforce BT?
  • what are the responsibilities of those architect roles?

Generally, we have 6 types of architect roles in BT:

  1. Solution Architect — these folks are in the BT Engineering team(s)
